A WONDERFUL DAY AT THE BEACH!! The ICF-CT MAY CONFERENCE

by Betsy Rodriguez, Program Chair

Thanks to interesting presenters, an eager, intelligent group of participants, and beautiful blue skies, we had a wonderful all-day Coaching Conference on May 21 at  the Mercy Center in Madison, Connecticut.

President Melissa Thornton started us off with an enthusiastic welcome and some great information about the ICF and about our local chapter.

Then our first speaker, Carole Jacoby, inspired us with the "Seasons of Change" model which was a fascinating look at how we might assist clients with change by helping them determine which "season" they are currently experiencing, and what opportunities that season brings.  Carole also introduced us to the concept of Mind Mapping which is a very visual, non-linear way to help clients explore issues and move ahead in setting and accomplishing goals.

Jerry Sinnamon, our second speaker, suggested that the 7 Principles of Huna might help us work more effectively as coaches. Over lunch, we selected which principle might be the most difficult for us to accept or understand, and we pondered this as we enjoyed walking on the beach and networking with other coaches.  Jerry actively engaged the audience in ways to use the principles after lunch and we concluded that many of us already embraced the 7 principles and could benefit by incorporating them into our work.

Randi Smith, who was our last presenter of the day, energetically kept us on the edge of our seats with her presentation on "Coaching High Performance Leadership Teams".  We learned a great deal about different styles and about how an executive coach might work to include, appreciate and use team members well.

Many thanks to all our Board members who supported us in running the conference and a special thanks to our presenters and wonderful participants.

Here’s the summary of the conference workshops:

BUSINESS TRACK:

I. SEASONS OF CHANGE
Growing through life’s ups and downs

Carole Jacoby, MCC

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” -Albert Einstein

Change is a shift in the world around us. It is about our environment and external situations.  Transition is the internal process we go through in response to that shift.  Life transitions often raise common questions, issues and themes that provide rich opportunities for personal and professional exploration.

Individuals and organizations hire a coach because they want change.  They want to feel more “alive” become more effective with their colleagues, clients or friends and they want to experiment with new behaviors.  Others work with a coach because they are in the midst of a change in their life or career.   Coaching can support the client in adopting the perspective that change is positive and that they can learn to embrace it and see it as an ally, rather than an enemy

This experiential workshop will offer coaches an opportunity to explore their own beliefs and behaviors about change.  The theme of learn how to help their clients “normalizing” change and viewing it as a rich opportunity for growth will be provided.   By presenting a “seasons” model (based on Carol McClelland’s book, The Seasons of Change) participants will be introduced to strategies and tools that assist them in supporting their clients in navigating transitions. The effective tools of mind mapping and action planning will be included.

Delivery Method:
A combination on mini-lectures, group discussion, individual and group exercises, mind-mapping, guided imagery and time for self-reflection. Demonstration coaching may be included if applicable.

Learning Objectives:

            Participants will:

§         Learn about transitions and change

§         Be introduced to the “Seasons on Change” model to use in their own life as well as with client’s in transition

§         Learn the effective tool of mind-mapping

§         Learn additional tools and strategies to use both in individual, group and organizational change.

II. COACHING HIGH PERFORMANCE LEADERSHIP TEAMS:

Creating Teamwork out of Conflict for Successful Organizations

Rändi Sigmund Smith, Ed.D., PCC

“Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” Will Rogers

Every Coach who works with executives and organizations (whatever their size) knows that perhaps the most difficult coaching step is forwarding the action from the planning phase to comprehensive execution or implementation.  Studies conducted by such well-known consulting firms as the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and McKinsey & Company show that while 90% of corporations – and small businesses – put great time,  effort, and dollars into developing strategic and/or business plans, 20% or less of those plans ever are implemented.

This leaves coaches with a big question.  Why?  If  corporations, professional organizations and small businesses clearly believe in the importance of having a strategic and/or business plan, why does it gather dust on the shelf instead of becoming a blueprint for company competitive advantage, strategic change initiatives, company growth and increased profitability.  According to many experts, the boulder in the path to organizational-wide implementation is that many Leadership Teams are low functioning and conflicted instead of high performance and cohesive.  The solution?  A business/executive coach with the ability to facilitate and coach high achievers in a virtual team environment, using a combination of quick, almost spontaneous management of group dynamics, powerful questions, and a knowledge of team members’ individual cognitive profiles.

This workshop will offer coaches an opportunity to learn the techniques that integrate powerful questions and group dynamics to produce high performance Leadership Teams that are comfortable reaching consensus and moving to action.  Participants will gain invaluable awareness of where the initiative should sit (Coach or Team) for critical interactive components such as the nature of the Team’s discussion content and the responsibility for the efficacy of Team process. Leading edge assessment techniques for identifying and addressing sources of intra-Team conflict will be explored and remedies discussed.

Delivery Method:
A combination of presentation, interactive discussion, individual and group exercises, role-play, and presenter modeling of some techniques will be included.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

§       Learn about the six categories of powerful questions in group/Team coaching;
§
         Be introduced to the six Group Dynamics that determine a Team’s level of performance and productivity;
§       Learn the four Cognitive Profiles that determine a Team’s potential for conflict; and
§        Practice developing and implementing group coaching strategies for their own work with Leadership and other Teams in Corporations and Small Businesses.

 LIFE TRACK:

 I. The Secret Principles of Huna

Learning the Healing Thought Process of Hawaiian Shamans

Jerry Sinnamon

Today, more than ever, coaches and their clients live fractured and dissonant lives, driven ‘by the numbers’, relying on ‘cause and effect’ thinking.  Yet, the premise behind many coaching philosophies is just the opposite: coherence of body, mind, and spirit as the key to joy and fulfillment.
It is difficult to sustain coherence in the face of everyday conflicts, stresses, and the media's hourly amplification of this disharmony. The Secret Principles of Huna, as practiced by Hawaiian Shamans, is an alternative thought system that is easy to learn, fun, and a practical way for building coherence.

Delivery Method:

Mix of lecture, conversation, demonstrations, work in dyads and triads in roughly equal parts.

Learning Objectives:

·        Gain palpable awareness of how coaches’ thoughts impact on clients quality and speed of learning and changing.

·        Exercises to teach clients, which can be employed to sustain what is most important to the client in the face of the life distractions which tend to throw them off track.

·        Coaches strengthen capacity to perform the core competencies of co-creation of the relationship; communicating effectively; facilitating learning and results.

·        Learn another set of assumptions and premises that can support the coaches’ training and practice when in need of an infusion of new ideas and approaches.

·         Gain deeper appreciation for the insight and wisdom within each participant and, by extension, in all of humankind.

Jerry owns Be On Purpose, an executive coaching and consulting firm with the mission to "inspire individuals and organizations to create transcendent coherence, effectiveness, joy, and fulfillment."  Jerry works with individuals, organizations, and small businesses to discover and realize their bliss.

Jerry was EVP of Griffin Health Services while it transformed from a struggling hospital on the brink of bankruptcy into an international model, acclaimed for its capacity to heal--mind, body, spirit--of clients, staff, and other stakeholders.
